You’ve likely read about things you “have to” do in certain states and around the United States in general. While there are many things worth visiting in the US, there are lots of tourist traps that don’t deserve the hype. Read through our list of 15 tourist traps in the US that you should avoid on your travels!

1. Mount Rushmore, South Dakota

This mountainside, featuring the granite, carved faces of presidents, has been a popular tourist attraction for years. You can see the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, all of which are roughly sixty feet in the area. Because it is in so many textbooks, tourists around the US flock to this site. However, it is a disappointing spot that should be skipped. Not only is the mountainside not very impressive, the surrounding area has been built up to be very touristy as well.

2. The Alamo, Texas

This is another historical site in the United States. A famous battle occurred in the 1800s. This Spanish Mission was the site of a clash between the Mexican army and revolutionary forces in Texas. Since it looms so large in the history books, tourists tend to imagine an impressive, expansive site. However, the Alamo tends to disappoint visitors since it is quite small. Despite the small size, tourist amenities and traps have come to dominate the area around the Alamo, making it even less desirable.

3. Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts

The famed place where the Mayflower supposedly landed and let off its passengers is the stuff of American legend. Because it has such a historical mystique, many travelers come from around the country to see it. However, there is not much to do at Plymouth Rock beyond looking at the rock, which isn’t very impressive. Plus, you may have to contend with many local school groups since it is a popular choice for field trips in the area.

4. Graceland, Tennessee

Everyone knows about the famous mansion of Elvis Presley, located in Graceland. For people who love Elvis, visiting his enormous Tennessee mansion may feel like a right of passage. However, for most visitors, it is not worth the trip. The mansion itself is overrun with tourists and just as gaudy as you’d expect from the famed King. You’ll want to skip this tourist trap unless you’re a die-hard fan. You’ll have to contend with large crowds and many pushy Elvis impersonators. For most people, it is simply not worth the hassle.

5. Fountain of Youth, Florida

Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park attracts plenty of visitors who want to see the notorious sight of Ponce de Leon’s search. Leon searched tirelessly for the Fountain of Youth in the 16th century, and this spot in Florida is supposedly where he found the healing waters. However, in modern times, it is not something to aspire to. It’ll cost you twenty dollars to get into the park, and it is an extremely boring location. Overrun by tourists throughout the years, the supposed fountain of youth is low on water (barely a trickle) and excitement. Skip this disappointing tourist trap while you’re in Florida.

6. Starbucks Pilot Location, Washington State

Since Starbucks has become such a pillar of the coffee industry in the United States, it is no wonder that tourists flock to the original location. Sitting near Pike Place Market, another top Seattle destination, it is well-positioned to catch tourist traffic. One pour-over coffee is unique to the location, and you can always say that you had a coffee at the original Starbucks, but at what cost? The line at this Starbucks tends to go out the door and around the block, further at peak times of the day. It simply isn’t worth it for a cup of coffee.

7. Navy Pier, Chicago

There are plenty of amazing things to do in Chicago, but unfortunately, Navy Pier is not among them. While the Navy Pier is built as a tourist attraction and has some carnival-style activities, it is not where you should be spending your time in Chicago. It can be a good place to enjoy the weather on a nice, sunny day. However, there are so many other places you could be. Explore other spots in Chicago instead, especially the architecture boat tour!

8. Salem Witch Museum, Massachusetts

Salem, Massachusetts, is most well-known for its witch trials of 1692, so it is no wonder the Salem Witch Museum is a top attraction. It receives tons of visitors yearly, especially in the spooky season. However, most visitors are not impressed by the museum. Located in a historic church, the museum has a more commercial than authentic feel, leveraging gimmicks about witches. Unless you’re a big fan of witches or invested in the history of the trials, you can skip the Salem Witch Museum.

9. Southernmost Point, Florida

If you’re in Florida, you may be tempted to head to Key West to see Hemingway’s haunts, the beaches, and the Southernmost point of the continental United States. However, even if you’re in the area, you should skip visiting the southernmost point. It is merely a marker along the coast, painted and marked as 90 miles to Cuba. If you want to see this part of the country, just look it up online. There are better things to do, and see if you’re ever in Key West, Florida!

10. South of the Border, South Carolina

If you’ve ever driven from New York to Florida, you may have considered stopping at South of the Border. Named because it is just south of the North Carolina border in South Carolina, South of the Border is a glorified rest stop with an over-the-top tourist feel. The decorations are elaborate, and it is designed to keep you there as long as possible with souvenirs, theme park rides, and a giant sombrero. It’s not worth stopping in this place, especially with all the tourists coming through.

11. The Gum Wall, Washington State

This wall in Seattle is just as gross as it sounds. This is an entire wall in Seattle where tourists chew gum and then stick it to the wall with thousands of other pieces of chewed gum. While it may feel counterculture and fun to be able to stick your gum to the wall, it is not worth the trip. The place has a gross smell all around it. Locals tend to avoid it since it can attract bugs, rats, and other things you won’t want to see while in Seattle.

12. Times Square, New York

Visiting Times Square when you’re in New York City is obligatory. However, we’d encourage you to see it quickly or skip Times Square altogether. Residents in New York City actively avoid Times Square due to the street performers, traffic, and high prices. Since there is so much tourist traffic through Times Square, there is also a high risk of petty theft incidents and scammers. If you want to see Times Square, quickly see it and move on. There are plenty of better things to see in New York City that better capture its unique character.

13. Niagara Falls, New York

Don’t be confused here. Niagara Falls is a beautiful natural wonder. However, the entire place is extremely overpriced and crowded. Whether you need to park your car, want to have a snack, or pick up a souvenir, you can expect to shell out some serious cash. If you want to see Niagara Falls, go the extra mile (literally) and visit from the Canadian side. The Canadian side of the falls has not been overdeveloped like the American side, so there are more activities. Some also say the views from the Canadian side are better!

14. Crater of Diamonds State Park, Arkansas

You will pay a pretty penny to get into this state park, but it is not worth it. The Crater of Diamonds State Park stretches 37 acres, where visitors can dig for diamonds, gems, and minerals. It attracts tourists because it claims to be one of the only places in the world where you can still hunt for diamonds from volcanic activity. However, it’s not likely you’re going to find a diamond or anything worth much in this park. Plus, you have to pay to get in and potentially rent the tools you’ll need for your search. Skip out on this tourist trap when you’re in Arkansas.

15. Four Corners Monument, Colorado

Much like the Southernmost Point, there isn’t much to do at Four Corners Monument in Colorado. This monument stands where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah unite. Since it is far from other things of interest in all those states, you’ll have to invest some time to get to Four Corners. Once you’re there, the surrounding area doesn’t have many amenities. You’ll likely grab a picture and immediately be on your way. It simply isn’t worth it to drive out to this underwhelming monument.
