The time has arrived to part ways with your career, move into retirement, and enjoy the endless days of not working. In today’s society, many people must continue working to keep their income stream or grow bored of living as retirees, so they find a new job. A skill that always piqued their interest, yet they never chased it. Numerous retiree jobs exist that pay a fair amount of money.

Note: the following pay rates are sourced from Indeed in St. Petersburg, Florida. The average pay rate for different professions may vary between locations.

1. Substitute Teacher

Retirees can make great teachers. It can feel rewarding to pass on knowledge and give back to the younger generations who must attend school and study for higher education or a job. Substitute teachers stand in for staple teachers, and they can make decent money. According to Indeed, substitute teachers in Florida make around $19 an hour. That’s a higher salary than what some restaurant managers make.

What about a job that blends expertise with feedback and tips? Tour guides spread their knowledge with their tours, and participants ask questions, opening a discussion about the subject matter of the tour. According to Indeed, tour guides in Florida make about $25 an hour, not including tips.

Bloggers write about their passion. They pour their hearts into their websites or online magazines, determined to share their endless love for a specific topic and get others involved. I know some bloggers who make $100 per post and others who make their own salaries. Again, it all depends on the profitability of their niche, their monetization model, and how highly they rank on Google.

Maybe you engaged in a successful four years as a high school football player, though your days on the college team injured you, preventing you from returning to the beloved sport. You became a lawyer or a doctor in a desperate play for money. Following years of that white-collar job, you longed to resort back to the ball game, so you became a football coach and made $25 per hour.

You delved into a career as a scientist, yet your fervor for the art didn’t let up when retirement rolled around. You can indulge in a post-retirement career as a tutor and earn $22 an hour.

Nannies are always in demand. Where there are children, there are nannies. Birth rates may be falling, but immigration rates are climbing higher still and with an ever-growing population comes the unsatiated need for childcare. Nannies make between $15 and $25 an hour, depending on the family and timeframe.

7. Pet Sitter

What creature do people love even more than their kids? Their fur babies. Pet owners pay a premium to ensure their animals receive the highest-quality care. My friend watches various animals, from snakes to birds to dogs, and he makes between $22 and $32 an hour.

8. Driver

Becoming a ride-share driver is a popular route for retirees. I signed up as an Uber driver during the lockdown, and all the app required was a license, background check, and age verification. Each company requests various requirements, though most drivers take home between $15 and $24 an hour in Florida, according to Indeed.

9. Bus Driver

A search on Indeed indicates bus drivers earn slightly higher wages than delivery drivers, averaging out at $19.65 an hour. If you like kids, know the neighborhoods in your city, and wake up early, bus driving could be your next career path.

During lockdown, many people downloaded Instacart to see what the buzz was about and test out a temporary job. Some continue to shop for others on the weekends for extra money, and make between $18 and $25 an hour, not including tips. Why not take a job where you shop for other people and receive compensation?

Are you a people person? Are you a people pleaser? Do you like free food? If you answered yes to any of those questions, a serving job is your Tinder date from heaven. Pick a favorable restaurant, learn the menu, and begin serving–only after being hired, of course. Servers can make up to $28 an hour with $100 extra in tip money, or more, each day.

This job won’t appeal to everyone and requires training and schooling, though many people find joy and economic success in real estate work. This is probably because the salary can breach the $200,000 mark. Keep pushing those homes!

13. Security Guard

You find yourself constantly looking out for others, ensuring everyone remains safe. Does your circle refer to you as a protective figure in the group? Security guards remain alert, protecting areas from crime and shady characters at all hours of the day. You can make between $14 and $19 an hour.
