Is Nissan This Bad? 14 Least Reliable Vehicles You Could Buy Today

Even buyers with a credit score above 750 are paying more than 7% in interest when purchasing a vehicle. With such a hefty premium for those who can’t pay cash, you better be sure that your vehicle will be reliable.

Countless buyers fail to do their due diligence when buying a car, truck, or SUV. Simply knowing a specific brand’s reputation is insufficient, as even typically reliable manufacturers have produced lemons.

If you are considering purchasing a new or used vehicle (or are still within the return window for a vehicle you recently bought), this is an essential list of vehicles to avoid (or return).

1. 2022 Jeep Wrangler

As it does every year, Consumer Reports in 2022 released a list of vehicles that are less reliable than a boat patched with duct tape. The Jeep Wrangler was the least reliable of the unreliable vehicles, garnering a reliability rating of 24.

Despite this poor rating, Wranglers remains one of the most popular vehicles in the US. You probably won’t find many mechanics or vehicle safety (or reliability) experts with Jeep Wranglers in their garages, though.

2. 2024 Volkswagen Jetta

Consumer Reports highlighted many 2024 models you’d not want your teenage driver behind the wheel of. While the Jeep Wrangler topped the list, the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta was not far behind, with a reliability score of only 25 out of a possible 100 points.

German-made vehicles are often associated with reliability, but we’ve found an exception. You should Jett as fast as you can away from the 2024 Jetta the smooth-talking Volkswagen salesperson is directing you toward.

3. 2016 Cadillac Escalade

The Cadillac Escalade was once a mainstay in high-budget hip-hop music videos featuring the likes of Nelly and Jay-Z. What those videos didn’t show you were the maintenance issues the 2016 Escalade has become known for, which include faulty transmissions and a less-than-reliable four-wheel drive.

Expect the cost of owning a 2016 Escalade to escalate quickly as it heads in and out of the mechanic’s bay.

4. 2024 Cadillac Lyriq

When a vehicle manufacturer has to get cute with the model name, it’s a possible sign that they’re trying to hide something—namely, a lemon of a vehicle.

That appears to be the case with the 2024 Chrysler Lyriq, which J.D. Power gave an abysmal 60/100 reliability score. The Lyriq is a futuristic-looking vehicle that’s more attractive than the standard Chrysler fare. However, a reputation for unreliability ultimately strikes an off-note.

5. Tesla Model S

Cue the mobs wielding LED-powered pitchforks. Hate be darned, Teslas have not been known for their reliability, despite a never-ending grassroots PR campaign by Tesla owners proselytizing to a public that would much rather spend five minutes pumping gas than several hours charging their car.

The Tesla Model S has endured a slew of recalls, and owners report long wait times (and high costs) when their vehicle inevitably needs work. These babies accelerate quickly, but your trips to the Tesla repair facility may also go from 0 to 60 in no time.

6. 2016 Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius earned failing marks on Consumer Reports’ 2016 reliability report card. Both the standard Prius and the Prius C earned worst-in-class reliability ratings. If you’re not getting reliability when you buy a Prius, what are you paying for? Certainly not curb appeal.

This is yet another example that EV manufacturers still have plenty to figure out. Chalk it up to the fact that the technology is relatively new, if you’d like. Just be wary of these reliability concerns before you pay the high price for a Prius (or any other EV).

7. 2023 Ford F-150 Hybrid

The cries of US truck owners have fallen on deaf ears for decades. “We want electric motors!” they have chanted in cornfields and construction sites across the nation, only to be met with gas and diesel options.

Well, Ford finally heard their demands, and their response is a problem-riddled one. The Ford F-150 Hybrid (which, let’s be honest, nobody was asking for) is one of the least reliable vehicles of the year. Between Ford’s spotty track record and the Frankenstein-ian feat of putting a hybrid engine in a pickup truck, is anyone surprised?

8. 2023 Chevrolet Blazer

Many car enthusiasts have all but sworn off US-made vehicles. Since the decline of once-respected brands like Ford and Chevy began, rumors of renewed commitments to quality have not been proven.

Consumer reports listed the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer among six vehicles unworthy of its recommendation. While the SUV’s exterior is flashy, what’s under the hood has Blazer owners blowing their vehicle maintenance budgets more quickly than anticipated.

9. 2020 Chevrolet Colorado

US car companies are in trouble. While looking at the cars on domestic roadways might make you believe US vehicle manufacturers are peddling plenty of products, many buyers have acute remorse.

The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado is among multiple Chevy offerings to make Consumer Reports’ 10 Least Reliable Vehicles list in 2020. When truck owners are hauling hay to feed their cows or carrying hundreds of pounds of untreated lumber, “unreliable” is not what they’re looking for.

10. 2024 Chryslers (All of Them)

Rather than picking a specific model of Chrysler, we’ll cite J.D. Power’s 2024 Dependability study and banish the entire Chrysler make.

The once-great American car company long ago lost its luster (and reputation for high-quality materials and assembly). J.D. Power confirmed the manufacturer’s reputation as a has-been, rating it last of all car brands regarding reliability. At least history will always have the Chrysler Imperial to look back upon with nostalgic wonder.

11. 2020-2023 Rivians

Rivian is one of Tesla’s most formidable competitors, but those who study vehicle reliability suggest that Elon Musk shouldn’t exactly be shaking in his cyber-boots.

Rivian models manufactured between 2020 and 2023 received some of the lowest reliability ratings of all vehicles, electric or gas-powered. Plenty about electric vehicles leaves questions unanswered. Rivian’s higher-than-average likelihood of ending up in the shop does not help those who envision an all-electric future.

12. 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Consumer Reports slapped several vehicles with the scarlet letter of unreliability in 2016, and it didn’t pull punches just because a vehicle had a high price tag.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earned the dubious distinction of Least Reliable Luxury Midsize/Large Car, which is not what you want to hear after spending more than $100,000 on a vehicle. This boat-length sedan proves that “expensive” is not always synonymous with “reliable.”

13. 2022 Jeep Gladiator

“Gladiator” is somewhat of an ironic name for a vehicle that Consumer Reports slotted among the most likely to cause owners problems in 2022. Perhaps the minds over at Jeep had an arthritic, scarred-up gladiator in mind, but they probably should have disclosed this to buyers before they plunked down tens of thousands of dollars for this Jeep pickup truck hybrid.

14. 2024 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

The Chrysler Pacifica is one of the sleeker minivans you’ll come across. However, in a vehicle class where safety and reliability are of the utmost importance, Consumer Reports’ indictment of the Pacifica is particularly damning.

Toss in the kinks that are common among hybrid and electric engines, and you can find much better value in the minivan market. You’ll catch hell if the van breaks down on the way to Timmy’s T-ball championship game, and you’ll deserve it if you fail to heed the warnings of Pacifica owners burnt before you.

Language changes every day. Tonal shifts, evolution of meaning, updated definitions, politically correct discourse, and conversation comprehension all contribute to our shifting languages. With shifting language come everyday terms people use, specifically people of certain generations, to relate to others. These phrases or words may pick up separate meanings from their dictionary definitions or express ideas that irritate others. For example, millennials love saying, “I don’t want to adult,” as 35-year-olds are working office jobs.
