14 Incredibly Boring Global Cities to Avoid While Traveling

Not every day, you get to visit a new city or travel somewhere new. Because you don’t get to travel all the time, surely you don’t want to go to any city that isn’t very exciting. While just visiting a new place can be exciting on its own, some cities worldwide can feel incredibly boring compared to others. If you want to avoid spending your precious vacation in one of these cities, the best thing you can do is be sure which cities you should avoid! Check out our list below of 14 incredibly boring cities in the world that you should avoid while traveling!

1. Pisa, Italy

Everyone going to visit Pisa is going for one specific reason: to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Most people who have gone to Pisa will tell you there isn’t much to see or do in Pisa beyond witnessing the Leaning Tower. While the grounds of Campo dei Miracoli are pretty spectacular, it is the only compelling thing to do in Pisa. Since there are so many other places to visit in Italy, such as Venice and Rome, not to mention all the beautiful small towns along the coast, Pisa is not worth your time on a vacation to Italy.

2. New Haven, Connecticut

Let’s be honest; the only reason you’d be visiting New Haven is to see the famous Yale University. As you may have seen in TV or college brochures, Yale’s campus is beautiful and picturesque, especially if you visit during the fall. However, once you wander beyond the walls of Yale University, there isn’t much to see in New Haven. In fact, petty crime is quite high in New Haven, so exploring the city at large can be unsafe. Unless you’re attending Yale, we’d encourage you to skip New Haven and visit Boston instead!

3. Cannes, France

Everyone will recognize Cannes, France, from the famous film festival. Unfortunately, beyond the film festival, there isn’t much to do or see in Cannes. While it is an objectively beautiful spot along the French Riviera, there aren’t reallyany unique reasons to visit this spot. You’ll find that it is more expensive than similar coastal towns without havingmuch to offer in return. If you want a French coastal experience, consider picking a different city!

4. Houston, Texas

Houston can be an obvious destination for some with the Space Center and plenty of arts attractions. While there are a bunch of attractions you can see, none of them are worth traveling for on their own. In addition, as a city, Houston relies on cars for getting around, so if you’re planning to visit you’ll have to take that into account. We don’t recommend stopping by Houston unless you have a compelling reason to do so, such as seeing a concert or show.

5. Zadar, Croatia

A few years back, Zadar was named one of Europe’s best places to travel. However, the influx of tourists and popularity have made this city less worthy of the title. You won’t find any unique attractions here beyond a light system that allows part of the beach to stay open at night. If you’re traveling all the way to Europe, we suggest skipping this overrated city and seeing something else instead.

6. Fresno, California

When you imagine Fresno, you likely think of it as the green garden of California, the home of agriculture and stunning outdoor spaces. Both of these things are true. Fresno even has a vibrant arts community in the local area. Despite this, Fresno doesn’t have much variety to offer travelers beyond museum hopping or appreciating the scenery. These activities will only get you so far. Plus, in addition to not having much to do, Fresno is a very expensive city comparatively. We’d suggest you skip Fresno in favor of something else.

7. Munich, Germany

If you’re not going to Oktoberfest, we recommend that you skip Munich on your trip to Germany! As the capital of Bavaria, Munich has become well-known around the world for its Oktoberfest celebration. With beers, Bavarian cream, and plenty of sausages to go around, the city absolutely buzzes with life during Oktoberfest. However, Munich is a pretty quiet city outside of that time of year beyond the beer and food. Check out a different city in Germany if you’re looking for a high-energy experience!

8. Bakersfield, California

You’ll often hear Bakersfield, California, in conversation with Los Angeles. It is located to the north of Los Angeles, right along the Kern River. Travelers often visit Bakersfield because the prices are slightly lower than in Los Angeles. However, the price drop is not worth the difference. You’ll have a hard time exploring the city, and the local attractions, such as the California Living Museum, are not worth a visit. We recommend picking another spot on your list if you’re visiting California.

9. Geneva, Switzerland

When you think about Switzerland, Geneva is likely to come to mind. While Geneva looms quite large in the cultural zeitgeist, owing to the Swiss timepieces, money, and many languages, the city is more about business than pleasure. Unless you’re interested in venturing outside the city, with plenty of beautiful nature nearby, spending much time in Geneva doesn’t make sense. There isn’t too much to do in Geneva, but the prices are still sky-high since it’s a major center of European commerce. We recommend visiting another part of Switzerland instead or planning to use Geneva as a stop on your way to nature beyond the city!

10. Atlanta, Georgia

Undoubtedly, Atlanta is one of the most important cities in the southern United States. With this comes plenty of museums and things to see, such as the Coca-Cola Museum, Martin Luther King Jr historical sites, and several art museums. While there are numerous cultural and historical sites, none of them are worth visiting on their own. Plus, Atlanta is an absolutely sprawling city, which is difficult to navigate without a car. This means you’ll have to spend a lot on cars to get around town or rent a car for yourself. Either way, we don’t think it’s worth all the hassle.

11. Acapulco, Mexico

Boring may not be exactly the right word for Acapulco, but it is not the best city for tourists to visit. While it is known for its thriving nightlife scene, as well as the beautiful beaches, Acapulco doesn’t have much else to offer. On top of that, Acapulco has also developed a reputation for being an unsafe place to visit. You’ll find that petty and even violent crimes have risen in Acapulco in recent years. We recommend skipping Acapulco and heading towards another coastal city in Mexico instead!

12. Nagoya, Japan

When you imagine visiting Japan, you’re likely considering cultural and historical attractions. Although Nagoya is one of the largest cities in Japan, it does not have much of this typical Japanese culture. The city is one of the country’s most industrialized cities, with many skyscrapers and modern sights. This can be a big let-down for tourists expecting a more cultural experience in Japan. For this reason, we suggest you check out another city, such as Tokyo or Kyoto!

13. Casablanca, Morocco

If you have Morocco on your list of places to visit, consider skipping Casablanca. Casablanca is one of the standard cities to visit in Morocco, though it doesn’t offer many unique sights compared to Marrakech and Fez. While Casablanca hosts one of the biggest mosques in the world, the Old Medina pales in comparison to other cities in Morocco. In fact, some tourists find it underwhelming since more of the architecture is modern, as opposed to the stylistic features they’re expecting. Unless you have a lot of time, just skip Casablanca!

14. Memphis, Tennessee

For Elvis fans, Memphis is likely on your list of places to visit. Known as the “birthplace of rock n’ roll,” Memphis is home to several notable sites, such as Graceland, the National Civil Rights Museum, and the riverfront. While these are fun attractions, there isn’t much else to keep you occupied in Memphis. Unless you plan to visit the attractions and quickly skip town, we’d suggest you look at another city instead!
