16 Habits That People Do To Keep Their Homes Spotless and Organized
There’s no better feeling than coming home to a spotless house. A clean home makes everything feel put together and less chaotic, which can do a lot for your headspace.
Having a neat home doesn’t happen magically. I wish. It takes hard work, commitment, and consistency. Even if it feels hard to build these habits, seeing how organized your home looks as a result will make everything worth it.
A great way to learn is to watch what other people do. To help you, here are some habits I incorporate to keep my home spotless and organized.
1. Always Make The Bed in the Morning

Make time to fix your bed as soon as you get up. Organize your pillows and spread your sheet evenly across your mattress. Making your bed every morning is the first step to having an organized home.
In addition, when you make your bed as you get up, you get a sense of accomplishment to start your day. You’ll feel more energized to start the day right.
2. Put All Laundry in One Place

You might toss your clothes on a chair when you get home. While it makes it convenient to wear them again, there’s a possibility you won’t. You might even forget about where you placed them and leave them to pile up.
When you change clothes, put your old clothes in the hamper. Organizing your garments helps keep your home clean and organized. It’ll also make laundry day faster as you don’t have to roam the house for dirty clothes.
3. Have a Laundry Schedule

I lost count of how often I’ve dealt with mountains of laundry because I kept making excuses not to tidy up. My overloaded hamper made my home look cluttered and chaotic.
A laundry schedule can lessen your hamper’s load. Depending on your clothing use and how many people live in your home, you can do laundry 2-4 times a week. If you have the luxury, wash one load at a time to keep the process manageable.
4. Put Clothes Away

Keeping clean laundry in the basket will make your home look more cluttered. A mountain of clothes looks messy, even if it’s clean.
When you’re done using the dryer, put the clean clothes away and fold them immediately. Then, put the folded clothes back in the closet. It really took me some time to get into this habit, but it really makes your home look neat and prevents your clothes from wrinkling too much.
5. Consistently Wash Your Sheets

A neat and organized home has a system for sheets and towels in line with your laundry schedule. You can’t skip washing your bedsheets, even if they still look clean.
Change and wash your sheets and pillow covers at least weekly. You should rotate your towels at least once a week or more if you shower multiple times daily.
6. Declutter Regularly

One of my favorite things to keep my home clean is decluttering regularly. I’m guilty of always buying new things, which I’m trying to stop doing. However, they can occupy space, making the room look cluttered.
I like to declutter my house twice a month and toss everything that we don’t use anymore. If things are still in good condition, I donate them in a box or sell them to make some more money.
7. Weekly Deep Cleaning

Deep cleaning is a great way to keep your home in perfect condition. That way, you prevent mess before it gets worse as you clean and organize your home regularly.
Me and my partner like to deep clean our home at least once every couple of weeks. We usually deep clean the bathroom every Friday night to welcome the weekend with a cleaner sink. We also clean the rest of our home on Saturday morning, so we can sit back and relax on Sundays.
8. Wipe Down Surfaces

Another hack to keep your home fresh is to wipe down surfaces whenever you can.
In our house, we wipe down the table after every meal to keep watermarks away. We also wipe down the TV screen and other surfaces to remove dust every week or so. You’d be surprised how quickly the dust accumulates.
9. Sweep and Mop Weekly

Another practice to keep your house clean is to sweep and mop your floors at least weekly. More regularly if you have kids and/or pets. You’d be surprised how much dirt your home accumulates over the week. It’ll be helpful to sweep or vacuum the floors and do a quick mop.
A way to lessen dirt on the floor is to have a no-shoe rule at home. It allows me to feel when it needs cleaning rather than just relying on how it looks.
10. Keep Surfaces Clutter-Free

My desk and living room are often cluttered after a week of living in our home. A surface full of clutters will make any space look chaotic and make it harder to focus on work.
As hard as it seems, always keep your surfaces clutter-free. Put everything back from where it came from after every use. Have a place for your pens, papers, and other things, usually everywhere in your home.
11. Find a Place for Everything

To keep your space organized, make sure everything in your home has a designated place. Use boxes, drawers, or storage furniture to keep things tidy.
This makes your home look neat and helps you find things easily. For example, when you need your phone charger, you won’t have to search through everything because you know exactly where it is.
12. Clean Up After Cooking

Cooking can be tiring, but you should never leave dirty dishes in the sink when you’re done eating. If you leave them overnight, it’ll be harder to clean the pots and pans you used for cooking.
As soon as you’re done eating, take a moment to wash the dishes and put everything away. It’ll be hard to get up after dinner, but it’ll be very rewarding once you’ve done it.
13. Clean the Fridge Regularly

It doesn’t have to be a moving-out-of-the-house deep cleaning, but a quick regular wipe of your fridge will do a lot of good. Your fridge keeps all of your food and produce, it’ll be great if you can keep their storage area clean.
Do a quick wipe every week and immediately wipe after for spills. You can also take out some fridge organizers every few weeks and give them a quick wash.
14. Categorize Paper

Papers might be thin, but having different types of people lying around without proper organization can make your home look cluttered. Even if they don’t seem to take up too much space, old documents and newspapers can quickly pile up.
Keep your office and home clean by having a proper place for your papers. Store bills, mail, notes, and take-out menus in a specific spot. If possible, you can request a digital bill and file it to reduce the amount of paper in your home.
15. Walk Around Before Bed Time

A great way to keep your home clean is to do a walk-in inspection. I like to walk around my house before bedtime to check if there are any messes that need cleaning up.
I walk around my kitchen, living room, dining area, and bedroom to check the surfaces and floors. Then, I sweep some dirt and put things away if needed.
16. Limit Shopping

Unless it’s a necessity, I avoid buying new things. One of the biggest culprit in a home clutter is excessive items. Being that I only live in an apartment, I’d rather avoid having too much stuff in the first place.
I only buy things that I really need and make sure they have a fixed space in my home. I always plan out what I need to buy. It helps to make sure that I won’t buy too much and don’t have any space for it.
