14 Things That You Should Always Buy at Walmart to Save Money

Walmart’s famous slogan, “Save money. Live better.” promises customers an affordable store. A wonderland of a supermarket selling the same products as other stores at reasonable prices. Part of what makes Walmart accountable for its low prices is its dedication to providing generic copies of name-brand items for half the price. Other stores do this, too, but Walmart’s low prices stand out. We’re comparing Walmart’s prices to those of other superstores, such as Target’s prices. This will highlight the discrepancies between the sales prices in the two busy markets.

1. Milk

Care for a glass of good old-fashioned cow’s milk? What about a gallon of rich 2% white milk to kickstart the day? Pour it into a bowl of cereal, drink it with cookies, or add to smoothies or dinner recipes. Great Value (Walmart’s generic brand) sells a gallon of the liquid for $2.94 compared to Target’s price of $2.99. Walmart asks for $1.76 for a half gallon, while Target wants $1.89.

2. Cheese

The best part about cheese is the variety. Havarti, Gruyere, Cheddar – and all its forms–Swiss, Pepper Jack, Colby Jack – I could go on for pages about the varieties of cheese. But for simplicity, let’s focus on cheddar. At Walmart, an eight-ounce block of sharp cheddar runs $1.77 at the current time. Over at the local target, customers pay $1.79, just two cents more for this measurement. A 16-ounce block of cheddar costs $3.44 at Walmart vs. $3.49 at Target. These smalldifferences affect bank accounts in the long run. Cheddar is cheddar; why pay extra?

3. Meat

The discourse surrounding meat inflation finds people consuming less meat and opting for more veggie-friendly options. I’m here to prove that affordable meat options exist in supermarkets. A 12-count of beef burgers at Walmart runs for $12.97, about $0.52 less than Target’s generic offerings. Name-brand vegetarian meat alternatives, like Beyond, also run at a lower price in Walmart. A four-pack of Beyond sausage patties at Walmart equals $4.42 vs. $4.69 at Target.

A package of boneless, skinless chicken breasts weighing between 4.7 and 6.1 pounds costs around $12.18 at Walmart, or $2.67 per pound. At Target, the exact product costs $12.32 for a range between 2.25 and 3.25 pounds, which averages out to $3.79 a pound.

4. Nuts

Pistachios exist in my mind as the greatest tree nut in the world. However, their price makes me second guess how I feel toward their salty sweetness. Walmart and Target both sell the beloved pistachio brand, Wonderful Pistachios, despite large price differences. At Walmart, a 6 oz. Container of roasted and salted pistachios costs $5.58, or $0.98 per ounce. The same bag at Target inflates to $6.29 or $1.05 per ounce of pistachios.

5. Chips

My cousin fostered an extreme fondness for Doritos as a child. She would snack solely on the Nacho Cheese chips, situating herself on her designated couch spot. She browsed the bag for the cheesiest chip, setting the prized chip on top of the couch until she satisfied her craving. As she ate the final, cheesiest chip, her parents set out to buy another bag of Doritos. They would benefit from Walmart’s party-size bag atf $5.49 compared to Target’s party-size bag at $6.69.

6. Soda

I do not drink soda and never have. But as a child of two soda enthusiasts, I’m familiar with the pricing trends of fizzy drinks. My father buys about three 24-packs of Diet Coke each week. Meanwhile, my mom nurses her Diet Pepsi dependency with half of that. One twelve-pack of 12 oz. cans of Diet Coke costs customers $7.64 at Walmart and $7.99 at Target. A 24-pack of 12 oz. cans of the carbonated drink clocks in at $13.48 at Walmart and $14.39 at Target.

7. Fruit

Dice it, slice it, and we’ll price it. Whether you favor tropical fruits like mangos and pineapple or opt for berries for a refreshing palate cleanser, the fruit food group costs less at Walmart than at Target. A one-pound container of Walmart brand strawberries costs patrons $2.14. Target’s is $2.59. When you double the weight to two pounds, Walmart charges $4.12 per case of fruit, and Target asks for $4.69 per carton. Target lists one kind of fresh mango on its website: premium mangoes at $0.99 each. Walmart charts a sweet mango at $0.88 per piece of tropical fruit and $0.64 for a yellow mango.

8. Bread

The crux of humanity lies in the pillowy flour (or gluten-free flour) makeup that is bread. Bread slices sit on either side of sandwiches. The item complements hearty meals with a pre-dinner snack. Bread works with almost every dish. I could list as many bread styles as cheeses as white bread, wheat bread, rye bread, and pumpernickel. But for the sake of brevity, I’ll talk about white bread. Target’s brand, Market Pantry, sells a loaf of sliced white bread at $1.49 per loaf, or $0.07 per ounce. Walmart’s Great Value brand decreases that price by $0.07 per loaf, making each bread log $1.42. A classic brand, Wonderbread also sells products at both stores. At Walmart, a 20 oz. Loaf costs $2.92 compared to Target’s $3.19 for the same product.

9. Fruit Snacks

Bringing chewy artificial takes on fruit to the lunch table either broke or made your reputation in elementary school. Sometimes, parents even purchased brands that claimed to use real fruit juice in their recipes. Wow! Fruit snacks today span across any genre. You can find pieces of gelatinous fruit candies shaped like horror monsters, Pixar movie characters, animals, or smiley faces. The choice is up to the buyer. The kids I babysit tend to favor Welch’s and Mott’s brands for their gummies. Walmart sells a 40-pack of Welch’s fruit gummies for $8.48 vs. the same package at Target for $8.79. Switching over to Mott’s, Walmart prices the 22-pack of Mott’s gummies at $5.48, and Target prices them at $5.69.

10. Yogurt

Yogurt pairs well with a cup of fruit, blended into smoothies, used in sauces, salads, or on its own. The fermented milk comes in a variety of types, starting with low-fat, vegan, greek kefir, and skyr. Greek yogurt turns out a thick, whey-strained concoction with a recognizable sour taste. A popular Greek yogurt brand sold at both Target and Walmart is Chobani. To offset the sour taste, Chobani creates numerous flavors of the snack. Chobani also creates a Flip item, which contains crunchy pieces that one flips over into the yogurt compartment. Stir the two together, and voila, you have a delicious masterpiece. A single-serving Chobani flip costs $1.49 at Target and $1.38 at Walmart.

11. Peanut Butter

Do you prefer an effortless spread of creamy peanut butter or smearing a challenging clump of chunky peanut butter on the surface of food? What about the oily natural peanut butter you must mix like concrete for tasty results? We will look at both stores’ generic brands of chunky and creamy peanut butter, beginning with Target. The Good & Gather creamy peanut butter is $1.99 for a 16 oz. tub. A 40 oz. Jar of extra crunchy peanut butter totals $3.99 ($0.10 per oz.) at Target. Walmart rings up a 16 oz. tub of Great Value creamy peanut butter for $1.94 and a 40 oz. Barrel of crunchy peanut butter at $3.98, just one cent less than Target’s price.

12. Granola Bars

How do you power through a long day? I stash granola bars in my bag, leaning on them in cases of emergencies, dizziness, or unexpected events when I must postpone meal times. Granola bars combine the best kinds of oats, nuts, sweet treats, and flavors for a protein-packed snack. A delicious flavor belonging to the Nature Valley brand, Oats and Honey, packages 12 bars into a box for $2.97 at Walmart and $3.59 at Target. Another well-known brand, Kind Bars, shelves a 10-pack of peanut butter dark chocolate thin bars for $7.48 at Walmart and $7.99 at Target.

13. Water

Many people resort to filtered water to hydrate them day to day. However, a good portion of individuals still purchase bottled water. Bottled water becomes a necessity in emergencies, camping, or trips without access to filtered water. Water brands differ based on location, thanks to spring access spread throughout the world and various purified water companies selling their products. Crystal Geyser is one brand overlap for spring water in the two shopping centers. A 30-pack of Crystal Geyser asks for $39.51 at Target and $21.33 at Walmart. On a purified water note, a generic 40-pack of purified water from Walmart runs for $5.36. Target sells a 32-pack of water for $4.79. When you break the numbers down, Walmart bottles cost around $0.13 per bottle, and Target bottles cost around $0.14, which is almost $0.15 per bottle.

14. Eggs

Do you remember the great egg debate of 2020? Egg-eaters all over panicked about the swift increase in egg prices. Egg prices continue to rise based on the supply and demand of the product. A six-count of large Grade A eggs costs $1.54 at Walmart and $1.89 at Target when looking at their generic brands. These numbers turn out to $0.25 per egg at Walmart and $0.31 per egg at Target.
